Privacy Policy

FlickPicker ("we", "our", or "the app") is a mobile application that helps couples and friends find movies and TV shows to watch together. You can swipe with a partner or create group sessions with 3 or more people. This privacy policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

Email address (used for sign-in and account recovery)
Username (chosen by you, visible to your partners and group members)

Preference Information

Streaming services you subscribe to (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+)
Favorite genres (e.g. Action, Comedy, Drama)
Favorite movies and TV shows selected during onboarding

Usage Information

Swipe history (which titles you liked or disliked)
Matches (titles that you and your session partners all liked)
Watch list entries
Partner connections, group memberships, and session data

Device Information

Push notification token (used solely to deliver notifications to your device)

Local Network Information

When you use the "Watch Now" feature, FlickPicker discovers Roku devices on your local Wi-Fi network. The IP address of your selected Roku is stored locally on your device to remember your preference. This information is never transmitted to our servers.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Create and manage your account
Suggest movies and TV shows based on your shared preferences with your partners or group
Record your swipes and identify matches between you and your session partners
Send push notifications about session activity, matches, and partner/group requests
Maintain your watch list
Discover Roku devices on your local network and launch streaming apps on your TV (via the "Watch Now" feature)
Display interstitial advertisements via Google AdMob (unless you have purchased the ad-free upgrade)

3. Third-Party Services

FlickPicker relies on the following third-party services to operate:

Google Firebase

Firebase Authentication — handles account creation, sign-in, and password resets. Your email and a hashed version of your password are processed by Google's authentication servers.
Cloud Firestore — stores your profile, preferences, swipe history, matches, watch lists, and session data on Google's cloud servers.
Firebase Cloud Messaging — delivers push notifications to your device. Your device's push notification token is stored to enable this.

Firebase's privacy practices are governed by the Google Firebase Privacy Policy.

Google AdMob

FlickPicker displays interstitial advertisements served by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device information and ad interaction data to serve and measure ads.
Ads are not shown to users who purchase the ad-free upgrade via in-app purchase.

AdMob's privacy practices are governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

The Movie Database (TMDB)

We use the TMDB API to fetch movie and TV show information (titles, descriptions, posters, ratings, and streaming availability).
Your genre and streaming service preferences are sent as search filters to retrieve relevant suggestions. No personally identifiable information is sent to TMDB.

TMDB's privacy practices are governed by the TMDB Privacy Policy.

Apple Push Notification Service (APNs)

Push notifications are routed through Apple's servers to reach your device. This is standard iOS infrastructure.

Roku External Control Protocol (ECP)

The "Watch Now" feature communicates directly with Roku devices on your local Wi-Fi network using Roku's External Control Protocol (ECP). All communication occurs locally between your iPhone and your Roku — no data is sent to Roku's servers, our servers, or any third party.

4. In-App Purchases

FlickPicker offers an optional ad-free upgrade via in-app purchase. Purchase transactions are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store and are not processed or stored on our servers. We only store whether the purchase has been completed in order to remove ads from your experience.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. Your data is only shared with the third-party services listed above as required to operate the app, and with your partners and group members within the app (e.g. your username, swipe matches, and shared watch list).

6. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your profile data from our systems. Session data, matches, and watch lists shared with partners may persist until the session is removed by either user.

7. Data Security

All data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS. Your password is hashed by Firebase Authentication and is never stored in plain text. We use Firebase's built-in security rules to restrict data access to authorized users. Communication with Roku devices occurs over your local network using HTTP on port 8060 (Roku's standard ECP port) and does not leave your local network.

8. Children's Privacy

FlickPicker is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

9. Your Rights

You have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you
Correct inaccurate information (e.g. update your username or email)
Delete your account and associated data
Withdraw consent for push notifications at any time via your device settings
Revoke local network access at any time via iOS Settings, which will disable the Roku "Watch Now" feature

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by other appropriate means. The "last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
